Vantage points for views over Vienna at night are not only the Giant Ferris Wheel, but also the Danube Tower with its revolving restaurants, or Kahlenberg in the north of the city. There are also restaurants and bars such as Cantino at the House of Music, the Sky Bar at Steffl Department Store or “Windows of Vienna.”

A charming tip for the winter months: guided tours to the roof of the Museum of Natural History – they take place all year, but the view after sunset can only be enjoyed during the winter months.

At the Belvedere – Gustav Klimt, the Painter Company and breakfast in the park The Belvedere will be showing Klimt’s oeuvre, spanning everything from his early works to the gilded masterpieces such as “The Kiss” at the “Gustav Klimt and the Painter Company” exhibition, on from June 20 to October 2, 2007.

The Company, founded by Gustav Klimt , his brother Ernst and Franz Matsch in 1880, created ceiling paintings for the Burgtheater, the Kunsthistorisches Museum (Museum of Fine Arts) and the Hermes Villa. A summer breakfast in the grounds of the Belvedere unites art and enjoyment in a unique way.

Privately owned monumental ceiling paintings and curtains created for palaces and theaters by Gustav and Ernst Klimt, and Franz Matsch in the late 19th century are to be publicly exhibited for the first time in almost 100 years.

The large works on show will include a 15-meter long frieze and seven paintings from the Peles Summer Palace in Sinaia, in today’s Romania. These and other works by Franz Matsch, Ernst Klimt and Hans Makart, as well as early Gustav Klimt portraits will bring the Ringstrasse era to life. Gustav Klimt’s gilded pictures “The Kiss” and “Judith I”, which put Klimt himself and the Vienna Jugendstil (Art Nouveau) school on the map, reflect the movement’s role as a stepping stone towards modernism.

On Sundays at 10 a.m. in July and August, art lovers will be able to combine art and enjoyment by taking breakfast in the park at the Lower Belvedere. After a special tour, visitors will be able to savor the view of the blooming flower beds as they enjoy breakfast on the terrace overlooking what was once Prince Eugene’s private garden. Both the themes of the tours of the Belvedere collections and the menus will change every week.

Please book in advance. Klimt and the Painter Company Belvedere, Upper Belvedere June 20 to October 2, 2007; daily 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.; Prinz-Eugen-Strasse 27, 3rd district.

Viennafair, the international contemporary art fair runs from April 26 – 29, 2007 and brings together about 100 leading international galleries from 17 countries to showcase contemporary European art. Side events include a newcomers’ exhibition and a panel discussion open to all visitors.
Some 1,500 artists will be showcased at Viennafair, including top Austrian artists Peter Kogler, Valie Export and Erwin Wurm and stars of the international art world such as Raymond Pettibon and Günter Förg. Along with the “bridge galleries” that focus on the contemporary art scene in Central and Southeastern Europe, other exhibitors from Austria and abroad will also be showing a large amount of recent work. Viennafair is an ideal opportunity to encounter and purchase work by Central European artists.

This year’s event will be the first to feature an exhibition space dubbed “Zone 1″ where newcomers to the art scene will be introduced by galleries. There will also be an open invitation to fairgoers to participate in a panel discussion on the subject of art biennales.
ARTmART – Buy Art for Only 70 Euros

ARTmART is an exhibition with experimental market character, in which more than 2,000 works by 200 artists are exhibited, bartered, and sold for the flat price of 70 Euros.

This way, ARTmART offers a new art market for beginners during the Vienna Fair – and a field to experiment for artists as well as new buyers. The works are chosen by curators, which guarantees quality and a range of young contemporary art.
View, barter, get to know – and buy!

The organiser managed to obtain the Spanish Riding School for the first time as location for concerts. In earlier times, ostentatious court balls, masked balls and carousels were arranged in this glorious masterpiece built by Emanuel Fischer von Erlach in the 18th century. Presenting the “haute école” of the Lipizzan stallions only a few days before, the Spanish Riding School will present the “haute école” of the piano at the beginning of August.

With this festival, the organiser will add another cultural peak to the already existing Austrian summer-festival. Piano-music and historic architecture in ultimate perfection will become a unique summer-delight for both Viennese residents and visitors.

The exhibition “Garden Pleasures: The Garden in Art” at the Belvedere Palace will be enchanting art lovers from March 22 to June 24, 2007. On show will be atmospheric works by Monet, Klimt and Nolde and other portrayals of gardens spanning the Gothic, Baroque, Art Nouveau and modern periods.
The Baroque Lower Belvedere palace and its orangery will be the setting for this exhibition of some 80 artworks depicting gardens. The glorious colors of the flowers, and their arrangement in interiors and gardens give the viewer a sense of how the artist has captured nature. Lovers’ gardens of the 16th century, Canaletto’s view of Vienna from the Belvedere, Monet’s garden at Giverny and Klimt’s country garden – all these reveal how the theme has been treated in successive epochs.

Changes in garden design through the centuries bear witness to diametrically opposed approaches and philosophies, from the strictly geometrical layout of Baroque gardens to the meandering pathways of English landscape gardens and the layered structure of art nouveau gardens, in which trimmed boxwood hedges tame the natural world.

The glorious gardens of Belvedere Palace are an irresistible invitation to exhibition goers to stroll at their leisure and thus create a direct connection between art and garden design
